Artemis Green is a non-binary + queer Director, Playwright and arts worker. While studying at the Queensland Academy for Creative Industries, Artemis realized their passion lay not in being on the stage themselves, but in orchestrating a whole work. Since starting their theatre company, Magnetic North, Artemis has developed a distinct aesthetic approach: the right stories, told beautifully, by the right people. Stories about marginalised communities should be told by those people themselves as a form of empowerment and political action. In their work with the trans and queer communities (including award-winning Cassandra and The Boy Doll), Artemis has learned to balance their artistic ideas with offering genuine ownership to community collaborators. The company’s rapid success with personally invested and uninvolved audiences alike speaks to the value of presenting the experiences of fringe community members as 'normal' rather than fetish pieces.
Artistically, Artemis has a fascination with old-vs-new thematic juxtaposition and approaching delicate subject matter without kid gloves. Their works are visually arresting and tend towards a post-modern style. Their process invovles guiding an ensemble through long-form devising activities around central themes, includings stimulus from classic works, myths, internet memes and popular culture. The result is a body of work that speaks to who we are now, in this time of flux, even as we stand on the shoulders of cultural giants. In the future, Artemis would like to engage new media and more immersive spaces to push the boundaries of the audience/performer relationship.
